I met up with an amazing young woman the other day who is beginning her weight loss journey. As we were talking and sharing stories, I told her about some of the key things that ‘finally’ brought me to a place of health and balance. One of those things was renewing my mind with The Word of God.
I’ll never forget, one night as I was laying in bed, I heard the scripture Proverbs 4:20-22 so clearly in my heart. I was so excited to read what it said, that I literally jumped out of bed! When I opened up my bible I read these words that would forever impact my life:
20 My son, pay attention to what I say;
turn your ear to my words.
21 Do not let them out of your sight,
keep them within your heart;
22 for they are life to those who find them
and health to one’s whole body.
God revealed to me that in order for me to find true health for my whole body, I had to keep the Word of God, and what He said about me before my eyes. I started looking up scriptures, and asked God to give me hope for things that I was believing for. I began to write them down in a journal, but realized that shortly after writing them down, I often wouldn’t look at them again.
That was when I decided to write the scriptures on notecards and tape them up everywhere that I would see them! I posted the notecards around my room, (on my mirror, by my nightstand), in my car, in my school folders, wherever I could ‘keep them in front of my eyes’. This also played a crucial role in me renewing my mind, because I was able to combat the lies of this world with the Truth of God’s Word, which is obviously a task, especially at first.
It eventually became much easier to keep the truth of what I was believing for in the forefront of my mind, as it got rooted deep in my heart. I soon began to believe what He said about me more than what I was experiencing at the moment. I started to see myself as healthy, balanced, and whole in my heart, and I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that I would reach that place, because I knew God promised it to me, and I know that He never breaks His promises!
I still write bible verses on notecards to this very day on whatever I’m believing God for! It’s so awesome to get into my car for example, and I see a verse that brings me right back to trusting my Father after a crazy busy day!
I encourage you to ask God to give you scripture for whatever you are having a hard time believing for. Maybe you’ve tried and failed many times in the area of ‘getting healthy‘….Well guess what, I’ve got good news! The Lord wants you to live a long healthy life on this earth, and for you to feel great about your weight!
How do I know you may ask!?! Because He has shown me so many precious promises that says He does! Seek God about what you are believing for, and write the scriptures down on note cards or a sticky note! Post them all around your house…Keep His Word before your eyes…And speak it out until it gets rooted deep in your heart and you believe it! I am living proof that Proverbs 4:20-22 works, and I can promise that it will produce life and health for your body too!

Would you be willing to share any specific scriptures? I am starting a 40-day journey today. Obviously, the journey is on-going but I am starting a book called “Faithfully Fit” which lasts 40 days. I am in the process of looking for scripture to put around my room, office, etc.
Thanks!

I love this and I will tell myself this everyday. I’m recovering from anorexia and its been hard. I’m losing my hair really bad and at times want to quit trying but I know that I can’t. I know god is with me and wants me to be strong and healthy and I know with him in my heart I can recover and get back my health and my hair. I pray everyday that he’s with me on this journey and gives me strength.
I love the devotionals.

Katie,
I love that you are doing a devotional. I once heard a lady on Oprah that lost a ton of weight “If Jesus can pull himself off the cross and rise from the dead, he can save me from this weight”. This is wonderful scripture. I just started a prayer journal and will add them today. Thanks for your beautiful words.

@Kara sure! :) I used many verses that spoke directly to me, so I would for sure encourage you to ask God to give you ones just for you, that way you will be able to hold tight to those verses that He shows you!
In addition, some great ones are:
Isaiah 53:5
Philippians 4:13
Psalm 147:3
Psalm 18:32
Isaiah 53:11
Hope these are a good place to start! :)

I’ve struggled with my faith for a very long time, still am, but I’m making baby steps. I’ve been attending a non-denominational church that I love a great deal and will be going on “the walk” (emmaus) in October 13th. I’m not 100% convinced I’m ready for it but I think only good can come of it. I used to not like reading things like this…it made me cringe but now, well, I’m finding it comforting.
Thanks for sharing what you do…it’s making more big differences than you probably think.

I am really excited that you have added Dashing Devotional. I find many “healthy living” blogs that a adore, but not many that start the foundation of healthy living on such a solid foundation of His Word. I truly believe I have been facing something similar lately. I have always tried to make healthy choices but a few months ago I decided to take my measurements instead of using the scale to determine if I was at an acceptable weight. The first 30 days were great! I had great energy and looked forward to my workouts and the results showed. I lost 9 inches but only 3 pounds. To my surprise, I didn’t even care about my weight, it was knowing a trimmed so much fat off! Well, I think I became TOO happy about it and made it my life the second 30 days. And I seemed to have noticed almost immediately that my results weren’t there. I lost my focus…I lost my center…what REALLY needed to keep me going, God and my relationship with Christ. You are so right in saying that God wants us to be happy with ourselves and make healthy choices so we can live a long, healthy life on earth. But He wants us to do so by being focused on him…not a number…not how many times we workout…and not how many calories we ate today. Him. and Him alone.
