Dashing Devotional~ What are You Thinking About!?!

September 14th, 2012 - Dashing Devotionals

Have you ever spent a portion of your life thinking about things that you wish you could change? Most likely the answer is yes, and you are certainly not alone! We all have days when we feel particularly ‘discontent’ about certain things.

As women, I truly believe one of the greatest areas of discouragement generally relates to our image. Whether it be about a body part that we wish we could change, ‘wishing’ we could look better, or even more like someone else…I’m sure most of us women have had thoughts relating to such things.

Now, before I go any further I want to clarify that I am not talking about setting ‘goals’ to improve or to become healthy. However, I am talking about thinking about your appearance to a point where you are letting it steal your peace or happiness. We must realize that these types of thoughts are a strategic way that the enemy tries to get us distracted from our purpose and to steal peace and joy from our daily lives.

Don’t believe me?!? Just stop for a moment and think about the type of ‘thoughts’ that play in your head when you think about your body or appearance. Now imagine if you never had a thought like that again. EVER. Do you realize how much joy, peace, and freedom you would have knowing that you would never have to waste another moment of  another day worrying about that thing that used to plague you.

Now, hopefully after taking a moment, you can see that these thoughts are nothing but a tool satan uses to steal from us. He is out to steal our joy, peace, and time by placing our attention on negative thoughts. The Bible tells us that “Satan comes to steal, kill and destroy, but Jesus came so we could have life and life more abundantly.” (John 10:10) This is actually good news, because as children of God, when we realize that we are being stolen from, we don’t have to put up with it anymore.  After all, why would we want let Satan steal from us when Jesus came to give us a life of abundance?

So how do we stop Satan from stealing another moment of our days with these thoughts that so easily steal our peace and joy? Well…I have more good news! The Bible tells us how!!

God knew we would encounter lies of all sorts while we are here on this earth.  In fact, our enemy is called the ‘Father of Lies’ (John 8:44), which is all he can do to fight against us while we are in this world. So the Lord told us exactly what to do when we find ourselves being lied to.  2 Corinthians 10:5 instructs us to “Demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God and take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”

In practical terms, this verse instructs us to take the thoughts that don’t line up with what God says about us captive. The word captive means to ‘take prisoner.  So we must treat these types of thoughts as prisoners, which is not allowing them to run free in our minds.

The second part of this verse says to make our thoughts obedient to Christ (aka the Word of God- John 1:14) This means to replace the lies from the enemy with the truth of the Word and what it says about us.

You may be wondering why all of this is so important.  After all, it’s just a few thoughts every now and then right!?! No! There is a reason that God instructs us to guard our heart and our mind, for out of it flows the issues of life (Proverbs 4:23).  If we don’t, our thoughts will steal our peace, our joy, and our strength, which will eventually effect every other area of our life if we aren’t careful.

I encourage you to free yourself today! Make it a priority to take those thoughts that are meant to distract and steal true life away from you ‘prisoner’, and replace them with the truths of God’s Word that will set you free! It won’t be long before you realize how much time, peace, and joy you have gained once you choose to focus on the abundant life Jesus has provided for you (Philippians 4:8).

Just Beautiful! Amazing truth that I can attest to in my life. Always recognize that every negative and hateful and degrading thought is from the enemy! Once we are aware of that it makes it so much easier to fight him and wipe that smile off his face! Love this!!

Thanks for sharing this, Katie. It is an area so many people struggle with! I have for sure struggled with this in regards to image, but God has really used this devotional today to speak to me about life events that I struggle to understanding. Satan has been stealing my joy with it and all the “whys” I have been asking.

“Demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God and take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” 2 Corinthians 10:5 YES!!!!!!!!!!!!
