Run the Race with Patient Endurance! Don’t Give Up!

“Patient endurance is what you need now, so that you will continue to do God’s will. Then you will receive all that He has promised.” ~ Hebrews 10:36

God has really been speaking to me about patience lately. Although I believe it applies to many different areas of my life, one of the most common areas that I believe that impatience gets a lot of people (including myself at times), is in the area weight loss or overall health/fitness goals.

We all know that it takes time to put weight on, and it usually happens so slowly that it seems to ‘creep’ up on people. When people get ‘out of shape’ it doesn’t just happen over night, but is most likely a combination of getting too little activity, and poor food choices over time. The problem arises when this behavior forms into ‘habits’ that we don’t even realize have formed.

So what does all of this have to do with patience you may ask!?! Well, just as it took time to form ‘bad’ habits that allowed you to get ‘out of shape’ or into any type of behavior that would lead to unhealthy patterns, it will most likely take time to form new habits that would produce the results that you desire.  This is where patience comes in.

I believe that one of the greatest tactics of satan is impatience. Think about it… How many times have you (or someone you know) made the decision to ‘get healthy and on the right track’, only to run into a few bad days or bumps in the road that caused them to revert to old patterns and behaviors?  Guess what…That is satan’s number one plan to keep people defeated!

The devil isn’t up to any new tricks, he has been working to make people feel impatient and hopeless for thousands of years! In fact, I can guarantee that he has used all of these lies just a few thousand times…“You might as well give up.” … “You’ll never make it.”… “Nothing is changing regardless of all your hard work.”… “Why even try?” Now that we see that all satan has is a bunch of lies to work against any progress that we are trying to make (all with the goal to get us off track), we know just how to defeat him!

Ultimately, satan has one plan in mind… to keep us from God’s wonderful plan for our life!  God has a plan full of freedom, joy, and peace that this world could never give. (Read Jeremiah 29:11.) The reason patience is such a vital part of attaining this wonderful plan, is simply because it takes time to change and renew our minds, our behaviors, and our habits.

It may take both time and discipline to wake up at 6 am to workout before it can become a ‘normal’ habit in your life. In fact, it may even seem painful to get rid of some of your old habits at first and make better choices. The Bible even tells us this will be the case in Hebrews 12:11 which says, “No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening–it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.” What an AWESOME truth this is!

We can see from this promise that if we endure the temporary ‘pain’ that comes with disciplining ourselves and continue to make the right choices with patience as our guide, then we can be sure that there is a harvest awaiting us that will produce a great peace within.

So, I ask you… Have you become ‘weary’ in your well doing today? Have you been tempted to give up because it seems like you aren’t getting anywhere fast enough? If so, I believe God is using me to write this to YOU today! He wants you to KEEP GOING! Keep running the race with patient endurance, knowing that He has great plans for you… plans that will lead to a harvest of peace!

Don’t let the enemy lie to you and tell you that ‘this time around won’t be any different’. The devil is just scared that you will run your race and find the awesome plans that God has in store for you! Don’t let satan’s wimpy lies hold you back. Get back on the track and keep running the race with patient endurance while keeping your eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. You can be sure that He has a prize with your name on it! (Hebrews 12:1)

“Patient endurance”…. I needed to hear that. We recently sold our house, we close this month on the 23rd and currently have no place to live with a 2yo and #2 on the way. We are feeling led to move out of state but got passed up on an offer we put on a house we loved. So, now we’re stuck and I’m in panic mode, although my husband is making another trip this weekend to look at another house. Trying so hard to trust in God and His perfect timing, but between hormones and our current time crunch, it’s proving difficult. Thanks for sharing.

This was just what I need to hear today. I’m going to print this out and put on my fridge, so when I need encouragement I can read through this again. Not only does this pertain to my weight loss, but also to trials I’ve been having in my marriage. So many times I’ve wanted to give up on both, but I know I’ve got to keep the faith. Thanks so much for your faith, and for this site. It has helped me tremendously. I would also appreciate it if you could send up a prayer for me and my husband.

Thank you so much for this post. I just found your blog and I have been eating healthy and walking for 2.5 weeks with only a 2 pound weight loss. I was really discouraged yesterday but after reading this I am right back on track with a better mind frame. Thank you!

Amen. This was most definitely something for me to read that applies to my life’s situation at the moment. Our God is greater and already has foreordained our lives, we must live in complete faith and trust in Him knowing that He’s got our back and is the ultimate healer and restorer!

I LOVE when you do devotional posts!!! They totally speak to my heart! THANK YOU! Sometimes, it is so easy to forget that satan is out to get us, tear us down, and constantly trying to keep us from God’s best. Reading this post, I realized that satan often whispers, “Nothing is changing regardless of all your hard work.” to me. I will be doing great in recovery and when I start to feel insecure, unloved, have an argument with someone, etc. satan is right there whispering that to me. LIAR!!!! Thank you for the reminder that God is working in my life and I need to be patient and NOT believe the lies of satan!

Love this… Hebrews 12:11“No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening–it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.”

I am going to put this on a huge index card and put it on my mirror in my bathroom and in my car to remind me of this amazing true!

Wow! This is all so true! Recently I have been struggling with a creeping weight gain and I always look down on myself when I get off track. I always tell myself “I’m going to start next week” or “this just wasn’t the right time”. This devotion really lifted me up and got me motivated! I’m going to the gym tonight! Thank you :)

I needed this devotion. I had surgery almost 3 months ago. The Dr has just released me and I want to start walking again so badly. I have a very bad back and it’s worse right now. Satan is using this to make me depressed. I am saying get behind me satan because God is in control!!!

I am so glad my daughter, Melanie, introduced me to your site. God bless you and be with you in your use of this site to encourage the rest of us.

Love, love, love! I definitely believe it was a God thing that I stumbled across your website last week. :) I so needed to read this and be reminded how sneaky the devil can be. I had honestly never associated those thoughts that I’ve had with the devil trying to keep me from God’s ultimate goal for me. Thank you for inspiring me to stay focused on the best that God has for me!

Hi Katie,

I am new to the site, and have been moving from page to page on your website and blog. I stumbled across this particular devotion-and I am SO happy I did. I had ligament reconstrution surgery on my ankle back in May, and it has been a long road to recovery. Still continueing physical therapy…though some days I just want to give up and not go because I am frustrated with the slow recovery! BUT thank you for this encouraging and uplifting devotion. What a fantastic reminder to patiently endure, stay focused on God’s promises and be aware of Satan’s tactics. I definetly needed this-so again, thank you and I pray that the Lord blesses you!
