“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and he will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.” Proverbs 3:5-8
Staying in solid, firm faith isn't always easy. James describes the battle in verse 1:8, "You can't make up your mind! You waver back and forth!" The ping-pong between doubt and faith is something humans have struggled with from the beginning.
The fruit of this kind of double-minded faith though is a rattling sense of instability. It leaves you with deep restlessness. Why? Because, double-minded faith RETAINS THE OPTION TO DISOBEY (read that again!). When disobedience – disbelief – is our back up plan we're on unstable ground!
When my husband and I got married, we agreed that divorce was simply not an option. This was important. If divorce was an option, when we are hard pressed, it would be the obvious easy escape. If we retain the option to quit on each other, our faithfulness and commitment are constantly challenged by that one weakness. The same is true in our relationship with God. If we waver and vacillate between trusting what we FEEL at any given moment, or trusting God’s promises we live in a constant state of restlessness. We simply cannot trust our feelings. They deceive us. I repeat, our feelings are not trustworthy. They are subjective, easily unsettled, constantly changing, and deceitful above all things! Retaining the option to disobey God and instead depend our feelings provides a tempting, albeit precarious easy out. As lovers of the Lord, we simply must decide. We must commit wholeheartedly and repeatedly to trust God! Disobedience, doubting, temptation to “divorce God” cannot be retained as an option. When we are hard-pressed we must choose to stay anchored to God’s truth, plan, and promises. Not only does this choice help make our paths straight and less painful, it also brings us health and vibrancy both in body and in spirit. We know this because it’s His promise. The Lord is faithful, and He promises to keep in perfect peace all whose minds are steadfast because they trust in Him. Today, I pray you enjoy the peace of an anchored soul.
Lord, steady my restless mind. Anchor my soul in your truth. Give me courage and discipline to smother ANY other option. I cast you away spirit of doubt! You must leave! I send you to Jesus to deal with, away from me!! I have a sound (sound: free from injury or damage, in good condition, robust, enduring, UNTROUBLED) mind in Christ Jesus. Lord, today I chose ONLY you! In Jesus name I pray, amen.
