“The eye is a light [the lamp] for the body. If your eyes are good [healthy; clear], your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are evil [unhealthy; bad], your whole body will be full of darkness. And if the only light you have [or light you think you have] is really darkness, then you have the worst darkness [how great that darkness is!]. Matthew 6:22-23 Expanded Bible (EXB)
I had such a difficult time deciding which version of today’s scripture to use. Each provided a layer of richness, depth and distinction that I loved. This verse is a perfect example of one you could get lost in, isn’t it? This verse alone could be studied for days! How incredibly cool is God’s Word? I digress.
There is good biblical support to suggest that the “eye” referenced here is actually referring to the heart. The Message version describes the eyes as, “The window into our bodies.” We have a choice, we can pull the shades and live in darkness, or we can “open our eyes wide in wonder and belief, so the body fills up with light.”
The “eye” is also representative of our spirit. If the eye (heart and spirit) is clear and spiritually perceptive, the whole body will benefit. We all have something – some mistake, some memory, some emotional hurt, that we try to keep hidden away in darkness. I promise you something though. Lies, deception, and disorder thrive in the isolation of darkness. Many times, having the courage to allow the Lord to shine the light of truth on those painful places brings healing not only to our soul, but to our body as well. There is a powerful connection between thriving in spirit that affects the body. When we allow the Lord to minister to our darkest places, in ways only He can, it's the most powerful ways to begin shining your own light for Christ. As He heals deeps places within you, you will be able to liberally pour out love in new ways. As he fills those painful places with the comfort and compassion He promises, you truly begin to shine your light before men!
Is there a place in your heart that you’ve taken into you own care? Is there something you’ve kept in darkness, isolated from the healing light of the Lord? Will you allow His light to expose it to the truth? His truth not only dispel the darkness, it is the one true medicine and source of healing, the kind that will truly make you free. Enjoy a healthy day!
