“In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O Lord, will keep me safe.” Psalm 4:8
“He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection. Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night, nor the arrow that flies in the day.” Psalm 91:4-5
We had a nasty thunderstorm roll in at bedtime one night this week. The night sky was completely lit by unrelenting flashes of lightening. The house shook with rumbles of thunder. Despite the storm, we attempted to tuck our little ones into bed for much needed sleep. I headed to bed myself, but about 15-minutes into my attempt to sleep, I heard the sweet voice of my little girl call, “Daddy?” I overhead the interaction as my husband went to his little girl's side. She asked, “Daddy, are we safe? Is it safe to go to sleep?” My husband reassured her that it was just thunder and that she was indeed safe. She trusts him. She trusts his words of assurance. His promises of safety comforted her, and she was able to lie down and sleep in peace. This is so symbolic of the relationship with our Heavenly Father. Sometimes, it’s easy to wonder, “Lord, am I safe?” Am I safe to trust your timing? Am I safe to rest? Am I safe to surrender my journey, my efforts, my worries, and my desires to you? I pray that we, like my little girl, will trust the loving, tender, calming promises of our Daddy. Today, if it feels like the storms of life threaten to overtake you, will you call out, “Daddy?” He will be at your side and keep you safe until the storm passes. May you enjoy peace in His presence and promises today.
