“Jesus said, ‘Come off by yourselves; let’s take a break and get a little rest.’ For there was constant coming and going. They didn’t even have time to eat.” Mark 6:31 (MSG)
Learning how rest as part of your long-term healthy lifestyle plan is not an option. Your body needs physical rest to thrive. Likewise, spiritual rest is absolutely necessary to prevent fatigue and burnout. Ours is not a culture particularly keen on rest. The need to rest is almost seen as weakness. We push and push ourselves until we have nothing left, and we crash. To endure, we must also allow for rest. Rest goes beyond simply not moving your body. True rest requires stilling your mind and spirit. It’s coming into the Lord’s presence and allowing Him to gently hush you and whisper, “Shhhh, be still and know that I am God.” Learning the art of stillness almost takes more discipline than driving ourselves to endurance, doesn’t it? Let me promise you though, it’s the counterpart to perseverance and simply cannot be overlooked. Find rest for your weary soul in the Lord today and allow Him to restore and refresh you simply by enjoying stillness in His presence.
Do you struggle to rest? Do you tend to push yourself to the point of exhaustion physically and spiritually? Do you view rest as a luxury versus a necessity? How can honor the Lord’s instruction to care well for yourself by building in moments of rest and stillness today?
