“When all has been heard, the end of the matter is: fear God [worship Him with awe-filled reverence, knowing that He is almighty God] and keep His commandments, for this applies to every person.” Ecclesiastes 12:13 (AMP)
My husband is a detail guy. He will literally read an instruction manual cover to cover. He wants to know the ins and outs of how things work. Me, not so much! While I greatly admire that in him, it’s not a characteristic we have in common. I get bored. I love a summary! I thrive on bullet points and lists! Maybe that’s part of why this verse is so endearing to me. Solomon is a straight shooter isn’t he? I love how he just says it like it is. He’s takes all his contemplation and knowledge and sums it up for us! He basically says, “Look, here’s the deal. There are no exceptions. At the end of the day all that really matters is what you did with the name of Jesus. Did you make His name great?” He’s like the ultimate accountability partner isn’t he?! I’m so thankful for this man and this scripture today. It helps us refocus on making the name of Jesus famous above all else. The Bible Panorama says, “The book of Ecclesiastes pleads for a Savior to bear away our sins, to forgive us, to cleanse us from all our selfish disobedience, and to give us peace and purpose in an empty world.” Allow that to really wash over you today! Walk in reverent awe that He did indeed come. He came for you and for me. For that reason and no other, we have peace that surpasses understanding, and precise purpose in a desperately needy world! Do you tend look back on your day with a sense of gratitude and satisfaction, or guilt and regret? How encouraging that the wisest man to ever live tells us that the key to ending each day well, is to tell God thank you through our obedience and awe of Him. Pause. Look around you, how do you see God in ways that leave you in awe right this very minute? Simply take a moment to say, Lord, thank you. Then, tell others and make great the name of Jesus!
