“In the [reverent] fear of the Lord there is strong confidence, and His children will [always] have a place of refuge.” Proverbs 14:26 (AMP)
I will never forget one summer day with my kids. It was a sunny, beautiful mid-summer day. We spent the morning walking around the zoo enjoying the glorious weather. In an instant though, seemingly without warning, the weather took a dramatic and violent turn. I’ve never experienced such a radical and rapid change in the weather like we did that day. Suddenly, we were completely exposed and without protection amid very dangerous conditions. The pelting rain was relentless, and lightning struck so close we literally felt the ground shake beneath our feet. My children were in very real danger. I mustered up strength and endurance I didn’t know I had, as I put my 10-year-old on one hip, and my 6- year-old on the other and literally sprinted to the nearest (ahem, it wasn’t very near) shelter I could find. I remember the moment I placed my children’s feet safely inside a building. The overwhelming sense of relief I felt was extraordinary. Though the storm raged on, I felt confident that my babies were safe and protected as we stood inside the sturdy, secure refuge that cement building provided. Today’s verse tells us that remaining in the reverent fear of the Lord serves in the very same way for our lives. As God’s children, when we stay in step with Him and remain in a posture of obedience and worship, we are protected. The word refuge literally means a place of shelter, protection, and safety from danger or trouble. Enjoy the confidence of knowing that your heavenly Father is your trusted place of protection today. Will you determine to put all your eggs in God’s basket? He is always your best-case scenario!
