“Those who trust in themselves [their own hearts] are foolish, but those who live wisely [walk in wisdom] will be kept safe [or refreshed].” Proverbs 28:26
You should absolutely doubt yourself!
Yes, you read that correctly. I'm telling you that you must doubt yourself. Of course, I'm not suggesting you doubt everything about yourself. Don't ever doubt your ability, your worth, your purpose, or your potential. Do, however absolutely doubt your feelings! Feelings simply cannot be trusted! Your feelings will deceive and mislead you. When it comes to what you "feel" at any given moment, you must constantly doubt yourself.
Try something today. Pay attention to how many times you think or say, "I feel." I bet you'll be amazed at how often it happens. In fact, left unchecked, the litany of "I feel" statements can become our native language.
I feel chubby.
I feel ill-equipped.
I feel alone.
I feel unsafe.
I feel unattractive.
I feel unappreciated.
Now, am I saying that those feelings aren't real? Of course not. I'm suggesting they may not be TRUE. Simply feeling something does not make it true. The bottom-line is that your feelings aren’t foolproof. They must be held to the fire of God’s Word in order to refine them. Often in our lives the thoughts, words, and choices that yield the most blessings are those we don’t feel like thinking, saying or doing. Today, whether in little whispers or booming shouts, when you’re tempted to trust in "I feel" pause and ask yourself, "Though this feels real, is it true?"
If not, hand it to Jesus and replace it with a seed of His truth. Even if it takes time to believe it, ask the Lord to give you strength to trust Him until the truth of what He says about you becomes your only voice. Sometimes it takes time to convince our own minds of the truth. It's ok to pray it until it you believe it. If you’re feeling caught up in a web of confusion today, simply confess, "Lord, I'm not feeling the truth of who You say I am. Will you fill in the spaces where my feelings fail me? Will you convince my heart and cause me to see myself the way You see me?"
Today, enjoy the TRUTH that set you free.
