31-day New Year, Fit Spirit Challenge by Sarah Shaffer
I am SO excited to introduce the 31-day New Year, Fit Spirit challenge!
In November, the Lord really started speaking to me through 1 Timothy 4:8 “For physical training is of some value (useful for a little while), but godliness (spiritual training) is useful and of value in everything and in every way, for it holds promise for the present life and also for the life which is to come.” God really began to impress upon my heart the importance of focusing on the wellness of our spirits. This challenge is based on that verse and will be the heart of our 31 day challenge!
After the holidays in particular, so many of us are really focused on our physical goals. Almost every year, the number one New Year’s resolution is to lose weight and get in better physical shape. Last year, almost half of all American’s listed weight loss as their number one goal for the year. In January, gym usage increases by 35-55% percent. We are bombarded with information about Paleo and plank challenges, macronutrients and meal planning, workouts and weight loss. Again, there is nothing wrong with any of these things, but the extreme focus on them really causes me to reconsider Romans 2:12 and ask, is our focus misdirected?
In the Bible, the 8th day has wonderful meaning. It represents a new beginning, and new life! That’s why for the next 30 days, beginning January 8, we are going to focus on spiritual training! The Lord truly wants to offer you a real fresh start this year! Are you ready?!
The challenge will be based on the SOAP method of bible reading.
What is SOAP? SOAP stands for Scripture, Observation, Application and Prayer.
Using SOAP as your guide to bible reading is a powerful way to make the Word of God come alive in your everyday life. It is especially helpful if you’re new to studying Gods word and need a place to start! Before you begin, I highly recommend getting out a good old fashioned pen and paper to write out your SOAP. I promise you it will have infinitely more power than simply reading through the steps! And, as always before spending time in God’s word, I recommend praying! Ask Him to reveal himself to YOU on a personal level and to give you clear discernment to recognize His voice!
How does SOAP journaling work?
1.) Scripture: To begin you choose a scripture. We have provided a daily scripture calendar to guide you, but don’t feel limited by these suggestions. Let the Holy Spirit guide you if there is a verse He has for you each day! First, read the scripture verse. Because it’s kept short you can really study the verse. I would suggest re-reading it, using bible study apps to read it in several translations, look up the meaning of words to really gain understanding of their meaning. This is your time to really understand the verse.
2.) Observation: What did you observe about the scripture that struck you. This can be one sentence or a whole book.
3.) Application: How can you apply the observation so that it affects your life today? What is God revealing to you? How can you make His word alive and applicable through that scripture verse today?
4.) Prayer: Write out a prayer to God based on what you just learned and ask him to help you apply this truth in your life.
Here’s how the 31-day New Year, Fit Spirit Challenge will work.
Commit! Just as you would commit to a new workout or eating plan, commit to making your spirit fit for the next 30 day and watch God at work in your life!
Plan! Again, just as meal planning or exercise requires planning to be successful, so does prioritizing time in God’s word! Make a plan for how and when you’ll spend time exercising your spirit!
SOAP journal every day for 31 days following the scripture calendar or on your own!
On February 8, the final day of the challenge, enter the give-away by sharing a story or testimonial about how focusing on a fit spirit every day for 31 days impacted you. What did God do in your life during this time? How did it change you? How do you plan to continue making this a priority? Anything, we want to hear it! Simply enter by sharing your story on the Dashing Dish website, Dashing Dish Facebook page, or Twitter, using #dashingdishnewyearfitspirit.
The winner will be announced on February 11, 1015 and will receive a custom notebook to continue SOAP journaling in, an Unafraid t-shirt from shopthetentmakers.com, and a $100 Target gift certificate!
Katie and I will are committed to the challenge as well! We can’t wait to watch God touch all of our lives in these next 30 day!
It’s hard to believe the holidays (and 2014 for that matter) have already come and gone! It was a wonderful year, and a wonderful holiday season, but I am ready for a fresh new beginning that always comes with the start of a new year! Before we say ‘goodbye’ to 2014, I thought I would share a few highlights from the previous year, and the Christmas/New Year season of 2014!
This year, we held our annual Gingerbread House Competition, which is always so much fun! We always do a different theme every year, this year the theme was animated movies! We had to make a house, character, or scene from an animated movie….So going along with the movie theme, I did a popcorn bar! There were healthier options, and some ‘fun’ ingredients… Everything in moderation! ;)
I made cupcakes with mini marshmallows, (toasted under my ovens broiler for a few seconds) to resemble popcorn!
I placed a popcorn bag at everyones seat, so they could fill it with their own personal popcorn selection!
We had quite the turnout- which always makes for quite the competition! :) It generally takes anywhere from 2-4 hours for everyone to finish! I guess you could say we take this pretty seriously! ;)
And here is the big reveal! Here is my husband Sean and my house, we did the house from the movie Tangled.
My sister Emily and her hubby Brett did the house from Despicable Me!
My other sister Sarah and her husband Phil did the houses from the Three Little Pigs from the movie Shrek!
Brianna and her friend Jana did the truck from the movie Cars!
Dayna and her hubby Matt did the house from Wreck it Ralph! (Funny story- it really did fall apart right before the picture! ;))
And…December came and went in a flash, and Christmas Eve was here before we knew it! We started the day at our house, where we had my husbands family (my in-laws) over for a little Christmas Eve brunch, and opened gifts together! Sean, Zoey and I were feeling very festive in our matching flannel! ;)

I feel so incredibly blessed and excited to share these books with you guys! I pray they are a blessing to everyone that reads them! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of your support! I couldn’t have done it without the Lord, and all of the encouragement from you guys! xo Katie
I wrote this book study to help readers dive deeper into the devotions in Devotions for a Healthier You. It is my hope that through this study, the devotionals will become more than words on a page, but rather a life giving study that will bring revelation of each person’s identity and value in Christ.
To use this study, simply go through one session per week (for ten weeks total), pairing it with the daily devotional reading. The daily devotions found in the book are simple and straight to the heart of the issue, focusing on one or two verses each, which will allow you to walk away with a ‘bite size’ morsel of the Word to chew on throughout the day. This book study was designed to take you deeper, with one session per week, focusing on subjects such as finding your value in Christ and getting spiritually and physically fit!
Each session begins by reading the lesson, and is followed with the questions to get the discussion flowing. You may do this study by yourself, but it was intended to do with a group of women, since iron sharpens iron. As you study, discuss, and share what God says about you in His Word, while reflecting on the great promises He has made to us, I pray your eyes are opened to greater revelation.
I hope this devotional book and book study are helpful resources in your journey to health, and finding out how greatly valued, treasured, and loved you are by God! Blessings~ Katie

As 2014 comes to a close, I want to take a moment to thank each one of you for your generosity! If you support Dashing Dish, you have been a part of giving this past year in a HUGE way! In January 2014, we started an extension of Dashing Dish, called Dashing Delivery.
We put the ‘Dashing’ into Dashing Dish by delivering groceries and grocery gift cards to those in need. Thanks to you guys, we have been able to give countless groceries and grocery gift cards to families in need and local food pantries!
I am sharing this with you today, because if you have supported Dashing Dish you are also a part of this effort to give back! I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of your support, and for helping us spread the love of God in a tangible way!
Merry Christmas Everyone!!! I just love this time of year, as we take time to celebrate the goodness of our Savior Jesus! I am so thankful for so many things…Words truly can not express just how grateful I am! I am grateful to the King of the world, who came as a man to save us, so we could not only have eternal life…but so that we could have a personal relationship with Him! I am thankful to my wonderful husband, who is my best friend, and biggest supporter, and I am thankful for my family, who are the greatest gift to me on this earth….
But most of all, I want to express my deep gratitude for each and every one of YOU…When I quit my full time nursing job as a step of faith a few years ago, I honestly had no clue what the future would bring. All I knew is that the Lord was pressing it upon my heart to help others find the freedom and joy that He led me to in the area of weight, healthy eating, and freedom from eating disorders…And I can honestly say that nothing in this world brings me more joy than to watch people find freedom in Him! I want to thank each one of you that has supported, and blessed me with words of encouragement! I have learned so much already on this journey, and I have come to find that the body of Christ is truly just that…A body, with many parts. As each one of us takes our place in the body, doing what the Lord has called us to do, we can help each other become all that Christ has designed us to be!
My greatest prayer is that Dashing Dish has blessed you and your family in finding health, balance, and a deeper walk with our Savior! This Christmas, I pray that you and your family are richly blessed, and that you time time to enjoy one another, and of course reflect on what Christmas is all about – Jesus!
Christmas is a time that has been set aside to celebrate the birth of Jesus, but so often the meaning of Christmas is lost in the hustle and bustle.
God gave the ultimate gift of His son Jesus, so that we could have everlasting life with Him, and be called son’s and daughters of God (John 3:16-18, 1 John 3:1). This gift was given out of the heart of the Fathers great love for us, and it is too precious of a gift to keep to ourselves!
This year, instead of making Christmas all about the decorations, the treats, and the gifts (although, all of those things are ok in their proper place), let’s shift our focus onto sharing Jesus with others, by showing them God’s kind of love.
Jesus said that all men would know that we are His disciples by the love we show to one another. (John 13:35) If we truly want to make Jesus the reason for the season, let’s give the gift of God’s great love to others this Christmas!
Here are some fun ways you and your family can celebrate Jesus, and spread God’s love to those around you:
1. Make Jesus the focus of your Christmas celebration with your family. Before opening gifts, take time to pray together, and read the account of Jesus’ birth (Matthew 1:18-25, Matthew 2:1-12, and Luke 2:1-20).
2. Give the gift of joy to those around you by getting a group together to sing Christmas carols! Some of the best places to visit are nursing homes, hospitals, and even your own neighborhood!
3. Make a birthday cake for Jesus, and sing to Him! This is fun especially if you have little ones, and it puts the focus on Jesus’ birth, and celebrating Him, rather than the gifts and toys.
4. Give the gift of time by volunteering at your local food bank, shelter, or salvation army.
5. Find ways to bless families in your community. Whether you give the gift of toys, gas or grocery cards, or even make a warm meal for someone, a simple act of generosity can show the love of God in a powerful and tangible way!
6. Visit, send a card, write a letter, or call someone who may be lonely or experiencing grief during the holiday season. It may not seem like much to you, but this one simple act of kindness may be the brightest moment in that persons darkest hour.
7. Donate a portion of the funds that would typically go to buying Christmas cards (or gifts) to a charity. Someone I know introduced me to this idea a few years ago, and it has blessed my heart ever since!
8. Pay for someones meal, coffee, or groceries. You never know how this random act of kindness may make their whole day, and it will most likely leave a lasting impression of God’s love.
9. Go through your closet (or kids closet) and donate clothes, boots, shoes, and coats to local organizations or shelters.
10. Invite someone who may be lonely to one of your Christmas celebrations. Sure, it may be breaking tradition a bit by having someone new join, but I am convinced that there is no greater way to show God’s love than to bring them into a house full of love when people need it most!
I hope this filled you with some great ideas to show God’s love that you can incorporate this Christmas, and maybe even make some of them your new Christmas traditions! When we turn our focus to others, and care for them in simple ways, we are essentially giving them the ultimate gift- God’s love!
On a final note about giving, I want to take a moment to thank each one of you for your generosity! If you support Dashing Dish, you have been a part of giving this past year in a HUGE way! Last year, we started an extension of Dashing Dish, called Dashing Delivery. God put it on our hearts to put the ‘Dashing’ into Dashing Dish by delivering groceries and grocery gift cards to those in need. Thanks to you guys, we have been able to give over $6,000 in groceries and grocery gift cards to families in need in one years time! Every month, we pray and ask the Lord where to give, and He is more than faithful to connect us with families. We also donate to our churches food pantry on a monthly basis, who not only feeds the hungry, but shares Jesus with them! I am sharing this with you today, because if you have supported Dashing Dish you are also a part of this ministry. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of your support, and for helping us spread the love of God in a tangible way!
