Cake Batter Protein Shake

Here's the Dish

If you’ve ever been to Coldstone Creamery, chances are you have tried (or at least heard about) the cake batter ice cream! In fact, it happens to be my husband’s favorite ice cream in the world. One day when I was making my hubby a protein shake, I decided to do make a protein packed version of his favorite ice cream flavor. This shake is thick and creamy enough to eat with a spoon, and it tastes just like cake batter ice cream! Have a ‘party’ for breakfast or post-workout with this Cake Batter Protein Shake!



The estimated total time to make this recipe is 5-10 minutes.


Put everything into a blender and blend until creamy consistency is reached! Top with sprinkles if desired, and Enjoy!


1/2 cupLow fat cottage cheese 1
1Scoop vanilla protein powder 2
3-5 Drops butter or almond extract
1 tbs Vanilla sugar free instant pudding mix OR 1/2 tsp vanilla extractanilla sugar free instant pudding mix OR 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
3-5Stevia packets (or sweetener of choice to taste)
1/2 cup-1cupWater (Alter this according to desired consistency)
5-10Ice Cubes (Depending on how thick you like it, use less for a thinner consistency)
Optional: 1/2 tsp xanthan gum 3
Sprinkles for topping!

1 Cottage cheese may sound strange, but TRUST me… this is what makes the ‘MILKSHAKE’ consistency! Also, if you are sensitive to dairy, you can use tofu to get the same consistency!

2 I use Designer Whey Protein powder. It has 100 calories per scoop. I buy the vanilla flavor because it’s a good base to add whatever flavors you want to make. It is also all natural. You can buy it from Kroger, GNC, Trader Joe’s, Amazon, or

3 You can get xanthan gum from most grocery stores in the gluten free section! Just a pinch of it makes your shake so thick and creamy!

Katie's Tip!

I also like to crush up a cake cone and sprinkle it on top of the shake! I eat it with a spoon, and it tastes like an upside down ice cream cone!

Hello! I’m using a new protein powder Tera’s Whey (I was originally using Body Fortress Super Advanced) and this is also my first time using Stevia! Tera’s Whey also uses Stevia which Body Fortress uses Sucralose. Is it normal for Stevia to make your tongue tingle a little bit?

This is SO good & addicting! Just wanted to add, according to MFP I get a different calorie content:
-Protein powder (ISOPure Zero Carb) 105cal
-1% Cottage Cheese 100cal
-SF vanilla pudding mix 13cal
= 218 calories.

Guess it depends on your ingredients. NEVERTHELESS yummy and great calorie count for the volume! :) I get almost 2 shakes out of this!!

I found this shake via pintrest and I have to say, I was skeptical. Luckily, we had all the ingredients in the pantry (except for pudding) and I whipped one up for breakfast yesterday and it was delicious!

If you use regular vanilla pudding, it almost eliminates the need for sweetener. I prefer to avoid chemical sweeteners and sucralose, so a teaspoon of regular sugar did just fine.

I just tried this post-workout today and this was AMAZING! I used almond milk instead of water.

This recipe is PERFECT except next time I think I’ll use 1/3 cup cottage cheese instead of 1/2 cup. There was the slightest hint of the cottage cheese flavor.

I could add more Stevia or vanilla extract, but we’ll see how it goes next time with the reduction in cottage cheese.

OH I think I am in love!!! I love cake batter ice cream but it isn’t in my “menu” these days. I didn’t have butter or almond extract so I used coconut- I really like it, I also didn’t add any sweetener as it was sweet enough already for me. I used Jillian Micheals whey protein powder as thats what I have. I aslo didn’t add any ice (cold gives me a migraine) but used 2 cups of water.

I love your shake recipes! This one is yummy! Two things I noticed that really “make” the shake- Xanthan gum- this gives the shake the shake-like consistency. It isn’t cheap ($12 for the package I bought) but, I think it will last for months. But, well worth it and I will add it to all my smoothies and shakes from now on. Without it there is more of an ice-milk vs. ice cream consistency. The other thing that is absolutely important to give this shake the cake batter flavor is the butter flavoring! I never would have guessed! Brilliant!! Also good with chocolate- tastes like brownie batter! YUM!

It took forever for me to get the courage to try this since I detest cottage cheese. ;) But I finally did and it WAS very creamy & good! I used 1/3 cup cottage cheese “just in case” I could taste it and I like that amount. It’s still very filling! Then I used 1/2 tsp vanilla extract and less than 1/4 tsp of almond extract (maybe closer to an 1/8th tsp). I also used chocolate protein powder the 2nd time and it was really good. I used 1/2 cup liquid (either unsw almond milk and/or water) and about 5-6 ice cubes. I also used 4 packets of Stevia. Very creamy. I think this is the best measurements of ingredients. I didn’t use pudding for this one. I’ve tried a couple other flavors but this is my favorite so far.

Oh and one final tip: I saw somewhere (maybe on this blog?) where the smoothie blends better if you blend everything EXCEPT the ice first so that’s what I do and it ensures that there are no cottage cheese clumps. Then add the ice and it gets very creamy! I use a generic Magic Bullet to blend mine.

I’ve tried it both ways, and I personally prefer the almond extract (but I love almond extract in everything). The butter extract version tasted a little bit more like the real thing, but I had to use a lot more than I expected.

Try them both, they’re both good!
