Shamrock Protein Shake

In case you aren’t aware, McDonald’s has a thick and creamy green milkshake on their menu just for St. Patty’s Day. A small size “Shamrock Shake” has 400 calories and 60 grams of sugar! If you’ve ever been tempted to grab one of these festive green shakes, look no further! This version is so thick and creamy that you can eat it with a spoon! The best part is, it’s packed with protein and is extremely low in sugar and calories. And, I can promise you that it tastes downright AMAZING! Get your St.Patty’s Day ‘fix’ with my lean, green protein shake!


The estimated total time to make this recipe is 5-10 minutes.


ONE SIMPLE STEP!  Put all the base ingredients in the blender, and blend away until desired consistency! Swirl in one drop of green food coloring just before serving, and top with whipped cream if desired!


1/2Cup low fat cottage cheese 1
1/4 cupVanilla or plain protein powder (I use Designer Whey, which is 100 calories per scoop)
1/8 tsp Mint extract (or to taste)
2-3Packets of stevia or sweetener of choice (or to taste)
5-10Ice cubes (more or less depending on how thick you like it)
4 ozWater (again, alter according to desired thickness of shake)
2-3 dropsGreen food coloring, or a handful of spinach to make it green!
PinchGuar or xanthan gum (to thicken)

1 Cottage cheese is what gives shake the thick milkshake consistency! You will not taste the cottage cheese I PROMISE, but you could also use vanilla Greek yogurt OR 1 frozen banana instead.

OMG thank you – this is amazing! I was doubtful I wouldn’t taste the cottage cheese (and I rarely put ice in my smoothies) but it worked. I used SF vanilla pudding, and about 1/3 packet of mint chocolate icing add-in powder (that new stuff by the yucky canned icing). It’s pretty, green, frosty, minty heaven!

My birthday is St Patrick’s Day and growing up my mother would take my for a shamrock shake at McDonald’s or buy the shamrock ice cream from Dolly Madison. I made this shake for myself on my birthday this year and have made it several times since.
